THE LONG WAY HOME

Golf and driving share an interesting relationship. For most of us, the game’s beauty comes with a small hurdle. Not many of us live just steps away from a golf course. So driving there becomes more than a choice, it’s part of the process. And it’s not just about getting from city streets to the fairway. The journey by car is, at least in my experience, an elevation of the adventure ahead. Some of the most memorable moments happen before the first swing. That brief stretch of tarmac, just after leaving the motorway, catching your first glimpse of the course, hinting at the day ahead. It sets a quiet tone, almost like a warm up for the mind. I usually blast upbeat 80’s rock music, hoping it’ll give me confidence for the day ahead. It rarely does…

The drive home, that’s where the real magic happens. If I were to go straight from three-putting the last hole to sitting down for dinner in a blink, the meal would taste like garbage. I wouldn’t know what to do other than replay every shot in my head, wondering how I could have done things differently. Yet countless times, the drive home has stopped me in my tracks, acting as a gentle antidote to a round gone sideways. Or every so often, carrying me high after a game well played. The trick is taking the right road home. (a vintage Benz isn’t necessary, but it doesn’t hurt either.) The longer it is from the motorway, the better. Just hope there’s still a little bit of sunset left and let the road do its thing. The little things are where the biggest joys hide.
